Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
